The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

According to news reports citing sources familiar with the investigation, authorities are examining immigration-related paperwork dating back to Omar’s childhood.

Omar strongly denies wrongdoing and says the investigation is politically motivated.

The search has sparked controversy in Washington, with questions about the allegations, the evidence and the timing of the investigation.
