THE 2026 MIDTERM FALLOUT CONTINUES — AND THREE NEW CONTROVERSIES ARE MAKING HEADLINES!
Republicans are still searching for answers after Democrats made major gains in the U.S. House, Senate and state elections across the country.
But the political shakeup isn’t the only story we’re following.
Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed is facing criticism over a heated confrontation with a British journalist, California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced sweeping death sentence commutations, and South Carolina Republicans are dealing with major losses in the state House.
Welcome to Sunrise Carolina with Joey Hudson!
TODAY’S TOP STORIES
🇺🇸 1. THE 2026 BLUE WAVE: WHAT WENT WRONG FOR REPUBLICANS?
As election officials continue counting votes in close races, Republicans are evaluating their losses and Democrats are preparing to take control of Congress.
We’ll examine the results, voter turnout, the political issues that shaped the election and what the changes could mean for President Trump’s remaining two years in office.
What lessons can both parties take from the results? And how will Washington change when the new Congress convenes?
2. ABDUL EL-SAYED’S CONFRONTATION WITH A BRITISH JOURNALIST
Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed is drawing criticism after a tense Election Day exchange with Sky News correspondent James Matthews.
When Matthews attempted to ask questions, El-Sayed challenged him about whether he was registered to vote in Michigan and questioned why he should answer a journalist from the United Kingdom.
The encounter also included El-Sayed placing his hands on the reporter’s shoulders.
Sky News has defended Matthews, saying he was carrying out his journalistic responsibilities.
We’ll examine the video and discuss the relationship between elected officials, journalists and the public’s right to ask questions.
3. GAVIN NEWSOM MOVES TO COMMUTE CALIFORNIA’S DEATH SENTENCES
California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to commute the death sentences of all 548 people currently on the state’s death row.
Their sentences would become life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Newsom argues that capital punishment is incompatible with California’s values and that the death penalty system is unfair and unreliable.
Critics, including some victims’ families, say the decision disregards the punishment imposed for serious crimes.
We’ll examine the legal process, the reaction and what this decision could mean for California’s criminal justice system.
4. SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE: REPUBLICAN INCUMBENTS DEFEATED
The political changes extend to Columbia, where ten Republican incumbents reportedly lost their South Carolina House seats in this week’s election.
We’ll examine the districts involved, the incoming lawmakers and what the changes could mean for the South Carolina General Assembly when it convenes in January.
How will these election results affect legislative priorities, state spending and the political balance in Columbia?
